Basic HPLC and CE of Biomolecules
Published in Paperback by Bay Bioanalytical Laboratory (June, 1998)
Authors: Robert L. Cunico, Karen M. Gooding, and Tim Wehr
Average review score:

So brilliant that I cried--twice!
This is without a doubt the most brilliant and poignant depiction of HPLC and CE of biomolecules in modern history. My extreme hyperactivity disorder usually means that I'm not able to sit still for such weighty topics--not without large amounts of abused Ritalin; but Cunico's work was so compelling and finely wrought that I found myself spellbound, even when drunk, even when driving in the backseat of a stolen car across the Mexican border at Tecate. I am not going to recommend drinking heavily and stealing cars. But I do recommend BASIC HPLC and CE OF BIOMOLECULES by Robert L. Cunico. By the way, I am extremely drunk right now.

Basic HPLC and CE of Biomolecules
This is a book that should be on the desk of anyone who is involved in analytical development of biomolecules and biopharmaceuticals. The content is well organized and written in a format that is easy to grasp and understand. The content covers almost all the different modalities of HPLC analyses and applications and provides real life examples of the techniques. It includes innumerable suggestions on how best to develop a validatable HPLC method and analyze the data appropriately.

I would highly recommend this book to both new and old members of biotechnology, especially the developmental, analytical, and quality assurance groups where there is frequently a need to implement a solid reliable method for analyzing biomolecules in a more rational fashion.

The Playful Eye
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (April, 2000)
Authors: Julian Rothenstein and Mel Gooding
Average review score:

Excellent resource for classic illusions
It is rare when you come across a book on optical illusions that has something new to offer, but this is what sets The Playful Eye apart from many of the other optical illusion books currently on the market.

The Playful Eye is a wonderful collection of classic illusions that were printed on obscure puzzle cards, postcards, trading cards, advertisements, and the like during the late 19th to mid 20th century. The editors have done a remarkable job in collecting these illusions from obscure source material and private collections. What is even more remarkable, and in my mind, one of the best aspects of this charming collection, is the amount of research that they put in labeling the sources for each image. This is a real reference tool for an illusion collector like myself.

The illustrations are wonderful and you are bound to see images that are not seen elsewhere. Lots and lots of fun!

a multi-layered visual treat
I love books that make you view things in ways that are unexpected--this book was a treat for my eyes and my brain. I enjoyed the compilation of vivid illustrations from various cultures and periods. I went through the book once to enjoy all of the wonderfully detailed illustrations, then I went back through the book again to tease my mind with the visual play in each one of those colorful pictures. This book is fun and can be enjoyed over and over again.

Looking For A Place In The Sun
Published in Paperback by Fairway Press (01 October, 1993)
Author: Terry G. Gooding
Average review score:

Great for youth
Kudos to Terry for writing a book that is fast-moving and a very easy read. Each chapter is almost like a separate story on a different part of his life growing up. The book gives a excellent description of a young person growing up during the turbulent 60's and 70's struggling to find their way, but get caught up in all the wrong things. The good news is that, in the end, he finds his ray of sunlight through faith in God. The book is a great read for teenagers who find themselves in a similar predicament when it comes to understanding their place in life. It also serves as a definite deterrent for young people who are tempted to experiment with drugs and alcohol by giving scary examples of what mind-altering substances to can. It's also a book many in the baby boom generation can relate to because it tells the story of all of us who wondered why the world was going mad.

Mary Fedden
Published in Hardcover by Lund Humphries Pub Ltd (May, 1995)
Authors: Mel Gooding and Mary Fedden
Average review score:

one of my top 10 favorite artists
Mary Fedden can change the way you look at things, and she certainly lacks the recognition she deserves on this side of the Atlantic. Her rich and imaginitive still life and landscape paintings have been a huge inspiration and an influence in my own art.

Her perspective on the ordinary objects of life, transforming them into pure beauty, and her amazing eye for composition make her work unique and immediately recognizable...and her use of color is dazzling.

On those rare occasions that I've had "empty canvas syndrome", this is the book that I've taken refuge in...I come away from looking through its magical pages with a fresh vision and a renewed spirit.

The text is excellent, divided into chapters of her early work ('40's-'60's), later work ('72-'94), and a biographical section. It also has a list of her exhibits, 5 photos, 11 black and white drawings, and 59 paintings in full color...which get more radiant in the 1990's, when she was in her late 70's (she was born in 1915).

Some of my favorites are "Red Still Life with Hopjes Tin", "Mel's Bunch", which is a jug full of carnations with 3 onions on a table, and "The Fierce Girl and her Roses". My only complaint would be that there are no sizes to the work, but taking a guess from the photos of her studio, they seem to be in the 20 to 30 inch range.

To quote the book: "Mary Fedden's painting reflects her personality in its capacious love for the the objects of its attention"...let Mary change how you view your universe with her joyous work...you'll find yourself looking at a mustard pot in a new way, and maybe wanting to paint it !

Average review score:

Exceptional Aid to Any Industrial Estimator
I found this book a more useful than similar book by John S. Page, because it applies to almost 20,000 piping material items. The presentation is very well structured, presented well and highly conducive to estimating database development. The productivity man-hour values are also very realistic

Records of North American Elk and Mule Deer
Published in Hardcover by Boone & Crockett Club (01 October, 1996)
Authors: Boone and Crockett Club, Jim Zumbo, Craig Boddington, Rich Fletcher, Richard A. Gooding, Hayden Lambson, Robert W. Munson, and Jack Reneau
Average review score:

A MUST for Elk and Mule Deer Hunters
This hardcover book is a must for anyone, like myself, who loves to hunt elk and mule deer. Each state and province is separate in the book and each animal from the Boone and Crockett is listed by the state or province from which it was taken. I also found the book, COLORADO'S BIGGEST BUCKS AND BULLS and Other Great Colorado Big Game, Second Edition, to be of help when planning mule deer and elk hunts. The Records of North American Ek and Mule Deer book has excellent field photos and tons of statistical information about my two favorite animals. Plus, I liked the chapter written by Jim Zumbo.
